Winter Garden

I don't need to be told. I already know: We planted way too late but I thought it would be fun to try anyway.

The picture above and below is the same project from different angles. If you have seen our back yard you know about our interesting quarter circle of dirt near our laundry room back door. It gets morning sun but not the evening sun so we thought this would be best for our green leaf lettuce and our kale that we planted from seed.

It sure was cold during the day today so Elsie is bundled warm.

You can see to the far right that our rectangle plot does not get sun in the winter so we put lots of fertilizer there to prepare for the spring planting season. Here is our square (probably is not a perfect square but that is what I use to describe my different plots). You can see that we planted three green leaf plants to compare their success from different locations. Then from seed we planted green onions, carrots, red cabbage, spinach, broccoli, leeks, and Swiss chard. For now we spray by hand to water and once they begin to sprout we will use the soaker hose we set up. Can you see the reddish/brown hose to the left? We draped it over our roof and down so it would not cause problems with tricycle riding on the sidewalk in the back yard. Anyway, this is our procrastinated effort with our winter garden. We'll see how things go. If nothing else, it was a fun activity as a family.
